A partnership agreement is reached to revive the hog business in Davao.

An official said on Monday that three government organizations in the Davao Region have signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to hasten the recovery of the region’s hog industry from African swine fever (ASF).

Abel James Monteagudo, the regional director of the Department of Agriculture (DA-11), said in a statement that his office signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) over the weekend with the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) for an intervention in the sector worth PHP132 million.

According to Agudo, the funds would be used for the region’s 24 agrarian reform beneficiary organizations (ARBOs) as part of the Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) program.

To finance the project’s three elements—the creation of breeding multiplier farms, intensive and modernized production, and swine livelihood enterprise—each ARBO received PHP5.5 million in support.

“The swine business may be revived with strength from unity. We owe DAR and PCIC a huge debt of gratitude for assisting us in stepping up our efforts to support our farmers, whose livelihoods have been adversely affected by the ASF, Monteagudo stated.

He asserted that the ARBs are essential to recovering the hog sector because they will work with producers to increase the productivity of hog production, processing, and marketing.

According to DAR Undersecretary for Support Services Milagros Isabel Cristobal, agencies should coordinate their efforts to increase productivity among ARBs and the community.

“We’re hoping to hear about these ARBOs’ successes and how they help the economy sooner rather than later. We can only ask that you help out the communities that are also in need and pay it forward,” she said.

The biosecure swine housing facility will receive PHP4.4 million from the INSPIRE project, along with PHP525,000 for 75 swine heads and PHP500,000 for food and biologics.
