With 65K fingerlings, BFAR repopulates Tarlac’s interior waters.
As part of ongoing efforts to revive the aquaculture sector, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Central Luzon (BFAR-3) released over 65,000 fingerlings on Thursday in the inland waters of San Clemente town, Tarlac province.
The “Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa” or BASIL program, which strives to safeguard and improve inland waters, was responsible for the dispersal action.
A team from the BFAR regional office and the San Clemente Municipal Agricultural Office oversaw the release of 65,000 fingerlings of tilapia and common carp into the waters of the San Clemente communities of Batacan and Nanguluan.
The action, according to BFAR Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz, is in response to the Municipal Agricultural Office’s request for stock augmentation.
According to him, the release of the fingerlings is intended to increase fish populations and improve impoverished fishermen’s livelihoods by ensuring a sustainable fish catch.
To ensure that there is a sufficient supply of food for our people, as well as to strengthen the agriculture and fishery industries in the nation, Cruz stated in an interview.
To guarantee that the advantages of water resources are maximized, he urged the fishing community to follow safe, proper, and environmentally friendly fishing techniques.
“This is through the proper use of gears and refraining from using dangerous fishing techniques,” he continued.
A total of 202 San Clemente backyard fishpond owners received 211,000 tilapia fingerlings from the BFAR in June of last year.
