PH conserves 62.69 MW during Earth Hour in 2023.

The country saved 62.69 megawatts (MW) of energy by turning out the lights last March 25 from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., or during Earth Hour, according to a report released on Monday by the Department of Energy (DOE).

According to the DOE, the event was a symbolic manifestation of solidarity intended to reverse natural loss and achieve a future free from climate change.

With 33.29 MW, Luzon saved the most energy during this year’s Earth Hour, followed by 20.5 MW from Mindanao and 8.9 MW from Visayas.

This shows how intentional conduct can lead to significant and admirable results. The overall impact would be even greater if people, organizations, the government, and communities joined forces not only for Earth Hour but also to make energy conservation a way of life, said DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla in a statement.

Lotilla advised Filipinos to keep up their efforts at energy efficiency and conservation to help manage energy demand, particularly during the dry season when power supply is frequently in danger.

“Let’s keep the momentum going by regularly implementing energy-saving measures in our homes, workplaces, communities, and enterprises, from turning off unnecessary lights to selecting more energy-efficient machines, appliances, and equipment. These are easy yet worthwhile things that we can do for the world, especially during times of high demand like this summer, he continued.

The amount of energy saved during this year’s Earth Hour was somewhat less than the 65.32 MW saved in 2022.

According to the DOE, many consumers used air-cooling devices like air conditioners last Saturday because the heat index was higher than it was the previous year, at 39 to 40 degrees Celsius.

With a total of 195.34 MW saved, the nation’s Earth Hour 2019 electricity savings were the biggest ever.

The goal of Earth Hour, a yearly event that began in Sydney in 2007, is to collaborate on solving the world’s most pressing environmental problems.

Filipinos have joined the Earth Hour movement over the years to support environmental sustainability and conservation.

It has developed into the biggest grassroots movement to mobilize people all over the world to take action on climate change and biodiversity.
