Through GCash, a UK trade representative wants to strengthen the relationship with PH.

Through partners in the financial technology sector, the United Kingdom (UK) hopes to expand its economic relationship with the Philippines.

The company represented the Philippines in an “intimate” roundtable conversation with digital experts from the Asia-Pacific region (APAC) and top UK officials during the London Tech Week 2022 from June 13 to 17, according to GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon in a statement on Tuesday.

“Being invited to an intimate discussion with the Prime Minister’s closest aides at 10 Downing Street is a rare opportunity. We had a really insightful conversation about how to use technology in this place to spur growth,” Sazon remarked.

Natalie Black, the UK’s trade commissioner for APAC, stated during the conference that the UK views the Philippines as an “essential partner,” with bilateral trade between the two nations totaling close to PHP134 billion.

“I believe our digital commerce connection can only become deeper and stronger with the help of companies like GCash,” Black said. “Total tech spending in the Philippines exceeded £6 billion last year.”

She mentioned that GCash, which has a valuation of over $2 million and is a member of the APAC delegation made up of over 250 investors, business owners, and government representatives, is the “biggest unicorn” in the Philippines.

The largest technology event in Europe, London Tech Week 2022, will focus on digital advancements and potential futures.

Sazon met with UK Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific Natalie Black CBE, UK Secretary of State for Trade and President of the Board of Trade Anne-Marie Trevelyan, and separately with UK Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Rt. Hon. Nadine Dorries MP as GCash was the only representative of the Philippines in the financial technology (fintech) sector at the event.
