DOST commits P1.5 million in funding to the Catanduanes abaca weaving initiative.
Through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has provided PHP1.5 million in funding assistance for the modernization of the abaca weaving industry in Catanduanes (SETUP).
The project has been given to the Apanti Agri-Industrial Products and Development company in Paniquihan, Baras town in Catanduanes, according to Marie Grace Molina, director of DOST-Catanduanes, in an interview on Monday.
The grant, which was given last November 17, is expected to assist the organization in acquiring higher capacity technologies that will allow it to upgrade its weaving capabilities, such as portable weaving looms, electric warping machines, and rotary presses with cutters and pressers, according to Molina.
According to her, the weaving business began with five to ten female trainees. She stated that it was able to alter its weaving looms and other machinery for nearly four years of ongoing training and research development.
Using premium abaca fibers, the company creates handwoven abaca fabrics known as “banaca” (banana-abaca), according to Molina.
Typhoons, one of many disasters the weaving sector experienced, had an impact on the province’s supply of high-quality abaca fiber.
Contrarily, the Covid-19 epidemic caused a nearly 60% fall in revenues and the labor force.
Molina observed a 40% increase in production capacity as a result of the upgrade program.
“It will also generate other higher value abaca goods that can be used in interior design, as accents for furniture, and as materials for upholstering, eliminating 65 to 75 percent of the rejects on abaca “pinukpok” cloth. They can also bring on three more employees, according to Molina.
