PNP will assist MMDA and LTO in pursuing drunk drivers.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Tuesday that it will support officers from the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in enforcing traffic laws and pursuing drunk drivers during Christmas celebrations and parties.

PNP head Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. issued a statement urging drivers to refrain from “driving while intoxicated” to prevent traffic collisions.

According to Azurin, “The PNP is stepping up efforts to further minimize Public Safety Indicators of Total Crime Incidents by undertaking measures to reduce vehicular accidents that may result in homicide, physical injury, and property damage.”

According to Republic Act (RA) 10586, often known as the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act, anyone found driving while intoxicated faces the possibility of imprisonment and/or fines of up to PHP500,000, depending on the seriousness of the accident.

In the meantime, Azurin claimed that they are closely observing the illicit sale of firecrackers in advance of the New Year’s celebrations.

This is done to maintain constant control over the production, distribution, and use of legal and illicit pyrotechnic devices, he noted, “with the end in view of no or decreased damage to property and injuries to people.”

The Act Regulating the Sale, Manufacture, and Use of Firecrackers and Other Pyrotechnic Devices, RA 7183, is being vigorously enforced by PNP units, according to the PNP commander.

This year, PNP personnel’s firearms won’t be muzzled, according to Azurin, who added that he is convinced they won’t fire them during the holiday festivities.

He did warn that if they fired indiscriminately, no personnel would be spared, and their immediate supervisors would also be held responsible.

He remarked, “We are reminding all gun owners of their duty not to indiscriminately discharge their guns while in festivity and merry-making.”

Anyone who uses a gun to celebrate the holidays will face the full force of the law, and this punishment will be increased if the offender is a member of the uniformed services. Rapid termination from the government service is required, he declared.
