DICT wants a “one-stop-shop” with NBI approval for SIM registration.
Through the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance one-stop shops, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) hopes to increase the registration of subscriber identity module (SIM) cards in outlying areas.
An NBI clearance can be used by people who don’t have a legitimate government-issued ID to register their SIM card, DICT spokesperson Undersecretary Anna Mae Yu Lamentillo stated during the “Sulong SIM Registration” online conference on Wednesday.
In order for the general populace to obtain their NBI clearances, “[we] petitioned the DOJ (Department of Justice) to put up a one-stop-shop in distant locations,” Lamentillo stated.
According to her, an Inter-Agency Ad Hoc Committee that would facilitate SIM registration in rural locations includes the DICT and DOJ.
In order to launch the registration in GIDAs (geographically isolated and disadvantaged communities), she said, “We are already working on the criteria and we will finalize this soon.”
In addition to other government agencies and private telecommunications companies, the Ad Hoc committee is made up of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Department of Education (DepEd), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) (PTEs).
She urged the public to contact Hotline 1326 under the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center for more assistance with SIM registration (CICC).
She observed that calls for help with SIM registration have gradually decreased, from 109 complaints in the first week to 46 in the second.
This is also a result of our PTEs’ continual efforts to expand the functionality of their websites and continuously enhance the procedure, she added.
In accordance with the most recent NTC statistics, a total of 21,782,509 SIM cards have been registered, accounting for 12.89 percent of the 168,977,773 active mobile subscribers in the nation.
Unregistered SIM cards will be terminated after the end of SIM registration on April 26.
