Over 12,600 deaths from Covid-19 were reported in China in the week preceding the Lunar New Year vacation.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said on Saturday that 12,658 hospital deaths between January 13 and January 19 were due to Covid-19.

The most populous nation in the world reported 59,938 such fatalities between December 8 and January 12.

For the first time since 2019, Beijing’s abrupt removal of “Zero-Covid” restrictions in December sent hundreds of millions of people home for the Lunar New Year break, which caused the virus to spread across the entire nation.

On January 19, there were 471,739 coronavirus patients in overburdened hospitals across the country, 51,683 of them were in serious condition.

President Xi Jinping raised to worry about attempts to combat Covid-19 in rural areas during a national video speech last week.

Health professionals worry that the virus could cause havoc on the frail in rural communities with underdeveloped healthcare systems.
