Given the soaring prices of the aforementioned vegetable throughout the nation, the provincial government of Negros Oriental is getting ready to set up a demonstration farm for bulb onion cultivation.

The Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) officer-in-charge (OIC), Emmanuel Caduyac, announced on Tuesday that the East-West Seed Corp. Philippines will visit the province the following week to explore the relationship.

In a combination of English and Cebuano, he stated, “The East-West Seed firm will give us free bulb onion seeds and the technology to produce them, and the provincial government will designate the location where the demo farm will be located as well as extra expertise.”

This occurs as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Negros Oriental continues to monitor weekly onion prices, which are still between PHP400 and PHP700 per kilo.

According to Caduyac, Gov. Roel Degamo openly supports the idea, and funds would be included in the projected PHP 130 million agriculture budget for this year.

Negros Oriental, according to the OIC provincial agriculturist, has a lot of territories and a climate ideal for cultivating onions.

The larger onion farms are in Iloilo and Central Luzon, and both of those regions essentially have the same sort of soil and temperature. He added that onions prefer direct sunlight.

He noted that because there aren’t many farmers in the province who are growing bulb onions, it’s necessary to get them elsewhere.

Caduyac stated that after the demo farm is set up, they would invite farmers and agricultural officials from the municipal and city levels for a visit in an effort to persuade them to engage in this type of farming.

He stated that it would take around five months to produce onions from seed to harvest.
