The month-long flower festival in Baguio starts

Panagbenga, the city’s most well-known month-long festival, began on Wednesday with a flurry of community-led events, including two inaugural grand parades in which students and groups from the public and commercial sectors participated.

The Panagbenga was established in 1996 to lift locals’ morale as they recovered after a significant earthquake a few years prior. 27 years later, the city finds itself in a new crisis as the festival aids in its recovery from the global coronavirus outbreak.

According to Andrew Pinero, head of the Baguio Country Club’s (BCC) media committee and manager of guest relations, “Panagbenga was born because the time had come for the city to recover from the devastation of the 1990 earthquake and there was a need for the activities to stir the economy and create jobs to help the city recover.”

Today, it remains the same. In 2019, the coronavirus sickness struck, and now we must recuperate. He continued by stating that Panagbenga “remains true to its mission to improve the city’s economy so that employment will be created. The pandemic drove away tourists and caused businesses to close.

The landscaping competitions in towns and schools, the fluvial parade at Burnham Lake, the kite-flying competition, Little Miss Panagbenga, and numerous outreach initiatives of civic action groups are among this year’s events.

Let’s not forget the “Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom” activity, wherein friends and families can create a design to be displayed during the major street dancing procession, added Pinero.

Up to the Panagbenga’s conclusion on the first Sunday of March, or the fifth of March, the canvases are shown along the section of Session Road and Harrison Road.

Residents who choose to stay at home and watch parades on television or on Facebook do so because they want to see what the parade has to offer—the hues and patterns of the floats and the outfits of the participants.

The Panagbenga hymn, which marching bands begin to play when the festival begins, “brings back good memories for many of us here in Baguio of how we all worked for Baguio to achieve the glory we all enjoy now and the benefits we all reap from the festival that creates a domino effect to the livelihood of the smallest business owner to the big establishments,” he continued.

A group of people related to the John Hay Poro Point Development Corporation (JPDC) led by Damaso Bangaoet conceptualized Panagbenga, which was named after the kankanaey phrase for “blossoming of flowers” and was modeled after the Parade of Roses of Pasadena in California.

The people of Camp John Hay used to take time to attend to the things sold at the market encounter, dine outside, and just relax. It used to be held for a week with little events at the football field.

Later, it changed to a two-week event before becoming the current month-long holiday.

The Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, which has representatives from all facets of the city, is currently in charge of organizing the event.
