Bulacan announced February 3 as a special day off from work.
The “Father of the Philippine Labor Code” and the “Father of Overseas Filipino Workers,” Gat Blas F. Ople, celebrated his 96th birthday on February 3, and Malacanang proclaimed it a special day off from work in this province.
It is only natural and proper, according to Proclamation No. 128 by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, “that the people of Bulacan be given full opportunity to commemorate and participate in the occasion with suitable rituals.”
The provincial government has planned events for the occasion under the subject “Gat Blas F. Ople: Dakilang Bulakenyo, Bayani ng Manggagawang Pilipino,” which will be attended by Ople’s daughter, Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople.
Ople will oversee a wreath-laying ceremony in front of the “Ka Blas” monument in the provincial government compound along with Governor Daniel Fernando, Vice Governor Alexis Castro, and other local leaders.
At the Pavilion of the Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center, a job fair will also be organized by the Provincial Youth, Sports, and Public Employment Service Office (PYSPESO) in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
The Department of Migrant Workers, in conjunction with Damayan sa Barangay, will also lead a medical mission.
According to the governor, Ka Blas was one of the most distinguished statesmen in the nation, and all Filipinos, not just Bulakenyos, would always remember his remarkable leadership and public service.
“Our hero Gat Blas Ople has continuously enhanced Filipinos’ quality of life. I want the young people to never forget his bravery and to use his example and efforts as motivation to serve the nation said Fernando in a statement.
Ka Blas was a columnist as well as a journalist and was regarded as one of the younger ones.
To run training programs for skilled workers, he also founded the National Manpower and Youth Council, which is currently known as the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
Additionally, he held a number of prominent political positions, including Senate President from 1999 to 2000 and Secretary of State from 2002 until his passing in 2003.
