No Filipinos were hurt in the earthquake in Syria, according to DFA
According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), no Filipinos living in Syria were hurt or killed in the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred close to the Turkish-Syrian border on February 6.
Speaking on behalf of the DFA, Ma. Teresita Daza said, “The Philippine Embassy in Damascus reported that leaders of the Filipino community had been called and they confirmed that no Filipino had been harmed as a result of the earthquake in regions including those that were badly damaged.”
According to the most recent DFA data, there are roughly 60 Filipinos living in Syria’s earthquake-hit cities like Aleppo, Latakia, Tartous, and Hama.
According to an update from the agency, none of the 248 Filipino residents of the impacted Türkiye provinces were injured.
Meanwhile, Enrique Manalo, the secretary of foreign affairs, sent his sympathies to the families of those killed in the tremors.
He declared that the Filipino embassies in Syria and Turkey will keep an eye on the situation and work with the Filipino populations under their control.
“I extend my sympathies to the people of Turkey and Syria for the awful loss of life and severe damage brought on by the earthquake yesterday. The impacted nations’ (Philippine) embassies are keeping an eye on the situation, and we are working with them to coordinate on how Filipino citizens are faring there, he said in a tweet.
There have been reports of over 4,000 fatalities in Syria and Turkey, as well as numerous aftershocks.
The strongest earthquake to hit Turkey since 1939 was felt in Cyprus, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt.
