Transport unions are urged to terminate their strike by commuters.

Although the administration said the nationwide transportation strike did not completely halt traffic in Metro Manila and other significant provincial capitals, some passengers have asked the drivers and operators taking part in the weeklong demonstration to call an immediate stop to the strike.

They claimed that the continuous demonstration won’t benefit commuters or the families of the drivers opposing the government’s Public Utility Vehicles Modernization Program (PUVMP).

Alfredo Loangco, a former driver of a traditional jeepney from Montalban, was forced to retire in 2017 owing to health problems, according to Rizal.

He claimed that his sons took over his business and operated three jeepney units nearby. Loangco stated that while he recognizes the strain that his former colleagues in the transportation industry are currently experiencing, he is concerned about what a strike extension may mean for their families.

Loangco, who was due for a checkup on Monday, waited in line at Quezon City Circle with other commuters to take advantage of the government agencies’ free ride program.

“Their family will suffer, my grandchildren won’t have anything to eat if my children who work as drivers don’t show up for work,” I said. I advised them to carry on with their tasks and to stay away from the protests. How are you going to feed your kids tomorrow? “, Loangco asked Philippine News Agency.

Long-term disabled person Linda Robles stated that although she opposes the gradual phase-out of conventional jeepneys, she thought the week-long protest would not benefit the drivers.

Only a few driver groups, according to her, are profiting from the current circumstances.

“Para sa unyon yan e, yang presidente ng ano nila ng samahan ng mga jeepney o sabihin nya na mag strike kayo kawawa mga driver anong kakainin ng pamilya , may pagkain sya syempre swelduhan sya may nagpu-protect may magpopondo sa kanya na no bibigyan nya ba yon? (The union president would just order the other drivers to strike; I feel bad for their family, but not the union president; given that he receives a salary and they have money, will he distribute the money to the other drivers?) she enquired.

Despite the ongoing transport strike, several customers claimed they weren’t really affected because the government had made adequate preparations to lessen the impact of the demonstration.

Carmen Dela Pea and Mercedes Arceo were only grateful for the free transportation provided by the “Libreng Sakay” program.

They remarked, “It’s like nothing happened; the only ones who will suffer are the drivers because there are free rides. Wala naman din nangyayari kasi sila rin naman mahihirapan mga driver kasi may mga libreng sakay naman dito.

Dexter Cardenas, the head of Quezon City’s traffic operations, reported that the city government sent out roughly 96 buses to help commuters who were impacted by the transit strike.

The availability of free rides prevented the demonstration from paralyzing or negatively affecting the commuters, he claimed.

QCity Buses, according to Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, have been placed in busy places including Cubao, Commonwealth Avenue, Welcome Rotonda, Novaliches Bayan, LTFRB, East Avenue, Quezon Memorial Circle, and Fairview.

She has also instructed village officials to offer free trips to any impacted residents.

Belmonte continued, “The city administration has also deployed additional employees from the Traffic and Transport Management Department, Department of Public Order and Safety, and the Quezon City Police District in order to assure the safety of the traveling public.
