According to Lone District Representative Greg Gasataya on Monday, the proposed legislation to establish a second legislative district in this city is awaiting a hearing before the House committee on local government.

Once the committee’s former chair, Valenzuela 1st District Rep. Rex Gatchalian, was named Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, a new agenda will be created.

“I spoke with Rex Gatchalian, a congressman at the time. We held a meeting, and now we must wait once more for the next chair’s schedule. A hearing should be scheduled in a few months, he continued.

The House committee on local government is now presided by Rep. Mercedes Alvarez of the Negros Occidental Sixth District.

Only one committee hearing will be held, according to Gasataya, and the committee report will be sent to the plenary after it has been approved.

He submitted House Bill 297 in July of last year, which aims to divide the 61 barangays that make up the city’s Lone District into Bacolod’s first and second legislative districts.

The present City Council unanimously approved a resolution endorsing the idea and urging the redistricting’s passage.

In order to ensure that a city or a province is given proper and adequate representation in Congress, one representative is required for every 250,000 residents.

Bacolod has a total population of 600,783 people, according to the 2020 Census of Population and Housing.

From the current 12 elected members of the City Council, a total of eight city councilors will be chosen for each of the two legislative districts.
