With the freshly constructed seawall, the fishing community in Aurora now feels secure.
A seawall that would shield the fishing town in Dingalan, Aurora from storm surges has been built by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
The PHP49 million, 355-lineal barrier at the Dingalan Feeder Port in Barangay Paltic is a complement to the already-existing concrete seawall, according to DPWH Regional Office 3 Director Roseller A. Tolentino’s report to DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan.
Tolentino said that the new seawall structure includes gravel roadways across the embankment that are five meters wide, roadway ramps, reinforced concrete pipe culverts for cross drainage, and grouted riprap opposite the seawall.
As it faces Dingalan Bay, Bonoan claimed that construction of the structure is essential to guarantee the safety of the local fishing community from storm surges and rising waves during heavy rains and inclement weather.
He added in a statement, “The new seawall also acts as a site where local fishermen may safeguard their boats during severe weather by tying them close to the structure.
A seven-meter storm surge unleashed by Typhoon Ulysses in 2020 forced hundreds of boats to collide with homes in Barangay Paltic.
DPWH is consistently working on infrastructure projects in Dingalan, according to district engineer Roderick Andal, as part of the government’s initiative to improve disaster risk mitigation and preparedness.
He continued by saying that in addition to building flood prevention structures, the agency has finished building evacuation centres in several flood-prone districts of Dingalan, a region frequently hit by powerful typhoons. (
