Upset curfew in South Cotabato Town as a crime-prevention measure

As part of his efforts to deter crime, Mayor Bernie Palencia has issued an order establishing curfew hours in this municipality.

The mayor stated on Friday that the curfew begins at 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Palencia gave the order on Thursday, six days after unknown shooters shot and wounded Rhyolite Balili, his executive assistant, in the vicinity of the town hall.

The new directive, which goes into effect on Friday, “exempts persons who, for work, emergency, and humanitarian reasons, need to be outside their homes provided they show proper identification (ID) cards,” he said.

When accompanied by an adult family member or relative within a fourth civil degree who has a valid ID, minors may be permitted to leave their homes during curfew hours for legitimate reasons such as medical emergencies or other compelling circumstances.

According to Palencia, the primary goal of enforcing curfew hours is to reduce the number of crimes, including those involving his executive assistant, which has been on the rise.

for 11 a.m. on March 17, Balili was about to arrive for work. when he was about to drive through the town hall gate, two motorcycle-riding males opened fire on his automobile.

Former town council member Balili is currently getting better at a hospital in General Santos City.

Without going into detail or mentioning specifics, Palencia stated, “I believe I was the target, and that it is politically motivated.”

Three members of the town’s Civil Security Unit were also shot and killed separately in January of this year. The cases are still open.

The relaxing of the “No helmet, No travel” ban around the town center is another preventive action being implemented, according to town police head Lt. Col. Joseph Forro III.

Forro also disclosed that authorities now know the suspects’ faces who shot Balili.

Without providing any additional information, Forro stated, “They were gun-for-hire and not from Polomolok.”

Palencia previously announced a PHP500,000 reward for anyone who can give the police information that could result in the capture of the two Balili shooting suspects.
