In East Samar, DPWH plants 315K “replacement” trees.

To replace the 315,100 trees that were cut down to make room for the slope protection rockfall netting project in Eastern Samar, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) started planting new ones on Wednesday.

The project’s 3,151 trees that were impacted by it were to be replaced, according to Ma. Margarita Junia, chief of the DPWH-Eastern Samar district engineering office. This was done to stop erosion along the route that connects Eastern Samar and the Samar provinces.

This year, we’ll be quite busy putting this tree replacement program into action. In fact, we already had 14,000 native tree saplings in our nursery that were prepared for the tree planting initiative, according to Junia.

The tree planting complies with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) tree-cutting permission, which instructs the implementing office to plant 100 seedlings to replace each tree that is chopped down.

We are also communicating (with) the local barangay officials in Taft who will assist us in the supply of extra seedlings due to the significant amount of trees that need to be planted. They will be a huge asset to this tree replacement effort and will also get a second source of income as a result, she continued.

According to Junia, the DENR would identify the forest lands, which would include the roadside from the cities of Taft to Arteche.

During their netting operation to shield 1.7 km of road in Eastern Samar from periodic rockfalls, the department planted 3,151 trees.

The 1.7 km of road is a part of the highway system that connects Catbalogan City in Samar and Borongan City in Eastern Samar, the two provincial capitals.

In order to confine and control rockslides, guard against the effects of erosion, and increase stability, rock netting is used on unstable rock faces and slopes.
