DA will assist farmers in reducing production costs as rice prices rise.

On Tuesday, the Department of Agriculture (DA) pledged to take action to assist farmers in reducing production costs, which are seen to be a significant contributor to the rising market prices of rice.

Although rice prices rose to as much as PHP5 per kilogram, DA Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista stated in a teleradio interview that the department is closely collaborating with the organization of rice farmers.

“Tinitingnan ng Ating Kagawaran kung Paano Ba Niin Sila Matutulungan kung Paano Pababain ‘yung Kanilang Cost of Production. The agency is looking into ways to assist farmers in reducing production costs. “Yung ating distribution po ng ating machinery not only for production po, but also for post-harvest facilities din po.” This covers the delivery of our equipment to both production and post-harvest facilities, she added.

Evangelista listed a number of issues, such as greater agricultural input costs and climate change, as factors that contributed to the rising farm gate and market prices.

The Philippines is not the only country affected by the rising cost of production, according to Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG), but also other countries that produce rice.

“Thus, when we buy something at the store, the local product we buy is tumaas, but the imported product is more mataas. Tumas din ang presyo, natin ‘yung Thailand, Vietnam, itong India, and Pakistan. If we examine the market, the local price of rice increased, but the price of imported rice is still greater. Maski imported man o local, tumaas. We observed India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Vietnam, all of which had rising prices. Whether it was locally produced or imported, the [price] went up),” SINAG chair Rosendo So remarked in a radio interview.

Thus, the market price of locally produced, well-milled rice increased by PHP5 and is now between PHP42 and PHP43 per kilo, up from PHP37 to PHP38 previously.

The farmgate price in Palay is 3.50 PHP, tomaas na. The farm-gate price of palay has already climbed to about PHP3.50 when selling in bigas. Around PHP5 for milled rice, he claimed.

He continued, “But, additional price hike from the earlier PHP2 to PHP3 adjustment may be felt for the imported rice.”

He said that the organization anticipates a lower market price for rice for the upcoming harvest due to the drop in input costs.

He stated, “[For] the next season, we hope that by October to December, the price would drop because the price of fertilizer has already decreased.

As of now, farm input costs account for about 60% of production costs, which influences farmgate and market pricing.
