Despite the escalating number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases, the Archdiocese of Manila will not immediately require face masks to be worn while attending Mass inside the church.

There are no urgent plans to make churchgoers wear face masks, according to Father Reginald Malicdem, vicar general of the Manila Archdiocese, but the Church will admonish them to not become complacent.

“Such a plan is not currently in place. We’ll just keep urging those who attend mass to wear face masks, he added in a phone interview on Thursday.

He also expressed confidence that people will continue to visit churches despite the observed rise in the number of new Covid-19 cases.

Malicdem continued, “As of now, we are not concerned that the people would be discouraged from attending churches again.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the Covid-19 positive rate has been rising.

According to the most recent Covid-19 Case Bulletin, the nation reported 341 cases each day on average from April 10 to April 16.

Compared to the 278 cases per day reported from April 3 to April 9, this is a 23 percent increase.
