Productive Marcos-Qin talks; clarification of “some pronouncements”

On Saturday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. claimed his meeting with the visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang was fruitful since it allowed Manila and Beijing to explain “some pronouncements”.

He stated that “some of the recent pronouncements made by our two countries and many other countries might be misinterpreted.”

Therefore, he continued, “Today’s opportunity to speak with Minister Qin Gang, the Foreign Minister of China, was incredibly important since it allowed us to directly communicate and resolve issues.

After his first in-person bilateral discussion with Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo on Saturday, Qin, who is on an official visit, met Marcos in Malacaang.

The Chief Executive did not go into any detail, but the statement comes in response to Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian’s recent comments about Filipino laborers in Taiwan, which prompted criticism, particularly from politicians.

On Friday, Huang said that the US intended to use the new locations created under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) to meddle in the situation in the Taiwan Strait.

According to him, Beijing has warned Manila to resist “Taiwan independence” if it sincerely cares about the 150,000 Filipinos who labor there, and it “reserves the option of taking all necessary measures” over the Taiwan Strait.

Manalo has reiterated that Manila upholds the One China Policy while also expressing worry over the rising tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

However, he emphasized that the Philippines will continue to pursue a free-standing foreign policy that aims to promote regional peace and prosperity.

Minister Qin’s visit was “extremely, extremely useful and extremely, extremely productive,” said Marcos. “We were able to talk things through a little bit, make plans for the future, and continue to work on growing the relationship between the Philippines and China, not only in the economic field but in the cultural, educational, and other exchanges,” he added.

Regarding the South China Sea dispute, Marcos claimed that he and Qin decided to create more “lines of communication” in order to lower tensions and swiftly address undesirable maritime occurrences.

In regards to the disputes, we decided to open up additional channels of communication so that any incident involving China and the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea could be settled right away, he said.

“So, we are currently working on that and are awaiting the Chinese response. We are confident that these issues would be worked out, that would be mutually beneficial for both our nations,” he continued.
