The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announced on Thursday that a bulk carrier carrying nickel ore and flying the Chinese flag came aground off the coast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

According to a PCG incident report, the MV ZHE HAI 168 was hauling nickel ore from Homonhon Island, which is located in the same province, to Caofeidian District in China at the time of the accident, which happened at around 6:10 p.m. on April 18. The ship had 20 Chinese crew members on board.

The following day, an eye examination was conducted by representatives of the local administration and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, according to the report.

According to the incident report, “The Coast Guard Sub-Station Guiuan will oversee the salvage operations and ensure no spillage will occur by installing oil spill booms.”

An examination for potential oil spill remnants came up empty.

According to the PCG, the Chinese crew also attested that there were no leaks or damages within the ship.

A salvage team from Singapore, according to the PCG, will arrive on April 27 to temporarily move the cargo to a barge and tow the ship away.

After the bulk carrier is removed, the PCG will do another hull evaluation.
