PCG appreciates global assistance in the WPS conflict

Following incidents with the China Coast Guard (CCG) and militia vessels during a seven-day patrol in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) thanked the nation’s allies on Wednesday for their support of the Philippines’ maritime sovereignty.

The West Philippine Sea (WPS) spokesperson, PCG Commodore Jay Tarriela, expressed gratitude to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the United States and Australia for their cooperation during a Laging Handa briefing.

“The PCG is happy that our patrols in the WPS are receiving support,” Tarriela said. “The PCG is happy that our patrols in the WPS are receiving support.”

He claimed that the recent patrols by PCG warships between April 18 and April 24 were “routine patrols” inside the nation’s exclusive economic zone.

He criticized Beijing’s assertion that the CCG’s ‘dangerous maneuvers’ close to PCG vessels during the normal patrol were in response to ‘provocative acts.’

The vessels 4402 (BRP Malabrigo) and 4403 (BRP Malapascua), as you can see from the videos that we released, adhered to the norms and regulations on collision prevention, Tarriela said. “I think it’s wrong to say that we provoked them,” Tarriela said.

On April 23, CCG warships 5201 and 4202 intercepted BRP Malapascua and BRP Malabrigo near Ayungin Shoal.

The CCG ships were said to have used “aggressive tactics,” with CCG vessel 5201 doing risky maneuvers 50 yards away from BRP Malapascua.

The CCG vessel, which was far larger than the PCG ship, took out risky maneuvers. So, I don’t think it’s accurate to say that we provoked the CCG,” he said.

On the other hand, he said that coordination with the DFA was still ongoing on President Ferdinand R. Marcos’ recent directive to map fishing grounds within Philippine borders.

“We have yet to discuss and sit down with the DFA to finalize the instruction given by the President,” he remarked.

Following the close call with the CCG, Marcos gave the DFA and the PCG the task of drawing a map of the Philippines’ fishing grounds in the WPS.

He emphasized that protecting Filipinos’ fishing rights is a top priority and has since brought up the matter with the Chinese authorities.
