Farmers in Legazpi receive equipment to increase rice output.
The City Agriculture Office (CAO) has donated farm equipment to at least nine local farmer associations.
According to Mayor Geraldine Rosal in a Monday interview, the farm equipment units were given in response to the national government’s request to increase rice production.
She said that the distribution, which took place on June 2, was a component of the city’s mission to mechanize agriculture to support the sector and increase productivity, particularly for palay, regarded as Filipinos’ major mainstay.
The distribution of farm equipment, according to Rosal, “will encourage rice farmers to continue their rice farming activities because they can sense that the Legazpi city government and the administration of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. are now seriously assisting the agricultural sector that is producing food for the general public.”
She said that the equipment will enable farmers to support the city government’s rice sufficiency and food security initiatives.
In a separate interview, City Agriculturist Shiela Nas stated that the nine farmer associations are all recognized by the CAO and that each of their members has been formally enrolled in the Registry System for Basic Sectors of Agriculture (RSBSA) following the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) requirements.
The RSBSA is the government’s database of farmers, fishermen, and farm laborers that acts as a targeting tool for identifying the recipients of various agriculture-related services and initiatives.
The Cagbacong Farmers Association received a water pump and one rice reaper unit, according to Nas, and the Banquerohan Farmers Association received two water pumps and a thresher. Both groups were legally registered, he added.
The Arimbay Irrigators Association and the Pawa Agriculture Cooperative are the other recipients of water pumps.
Nas stated that although the CAO will oversee the operation of the rice mill and thresher machines, any farmers’ association may seek to utilize them for free.
The distribution of machinery, according to Joana Valladolid, a councilor from Barangay Banquerohan, is a huge blessing for all farmers because it may boost output and raise their revenue.
The Banquerohan Farmers Association, which has 209 members and cultivates 68 hectares of rice fields, is one of the major contributors to the production of palay in Legazpi, she said.
