The DA expands Eastern Visayas’ Soil Rejuvenation Programme.

To boost production, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is extending the application of its soil rejuvenation program to 10 additional farming towns in five provinces of the Eastern Visayas region.

The Yamang Lupa: Sustainable Community-Based Action R4DE for Enhancement, Upliftment and Prosperity (SCALE-UP) program is now prepared for implementation in other areas, according to DA Eastern Visayas Regional Executive Director Andrew Orais, following the success of the pilot program in particular rice farms in the provinces of Samar and Leyte.

Abuyog and Javier in Leyte; Maasin City and Bontoc in Southern Leyte; Borongan City and Salcedo in Eastern Samar; Catarman and Allen in Northern Samar; and Naval and Caibiran towns in Biliran province are the covered areas for this year, each measuring over 10,000 hectares.

To further increase farmer productivity, the Yamang Lupa SCALE-UP program in the area plans to use the adaptive scientific revival technique. Orais stated on Monday, “We are hoping that this project will be our key to ensuring food security in the area.

The program was introduced by the department in 2014, with Samar, Quezon, and Zamboanga Sibugay serving as the program’s test provinces.

The DA has designated the towns of Javier and Abuyog in Leyte as expansion locations in 2022 to duplicate the program’s success in Samar.

According to Leonarda Londina, head of the DA’s regional research section, the program adopts Bhoochetana ideas and methods for managing natural resources to promote sustainable agriculture. The Indian word for soil renewal is bhoochetana.

The goal, according to Londina, is to “develop a program management structure and policies within the regional network, increase agricultural productivity and profitability while conserving natural resources, enhance capacities of farmers and groups, community, and other stakeholders, and to develop sustainable livelihood and enhance marketing strategies.”

According to DA, the Samar pilot implementation produced soil fertility maps, applied best farm management techniques, and adhered to the suggested macro- and micronutrients for soil rejuvenation.

According to the DA, all commodities’ average yields in tonnes per hectare improved dramatically. Ginger, rice, and sweet potatoes increased 193%, 30%, and 79%, respectively.
