ππ Marcos urged to create advisory body on LGBTQIA+ affairs
Advocacy group LGBT Pilipinas has called on President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to establish a presidential advisory body or commission to address the concerns of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and more) community.
LGBT Pilipinas presented the proposal, hoping for the endorsement of First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, who attended the oath-taking ceremony of its new set of officers, led by national president Director Dindi Tan.
Araneta-Marcos expressed confidence that her husband would heed the request as a gesture of gratitude to the LGBTQIA+ members who supported his presidential campaign in the May 9, 2022, national elections. She stated that the proposal would make them “stronger than ever.”
The proposal aims to ensure the visibility and representation of the LGBTQIA+ community within the government bureaucracy.
President and First Lady hosted a gathering with LGBT Pilipinas members at MalacaΓ±an Palace in Manila, aligning with the celebration of Pride Month in June.
During his speech, Marcos assured the LGBTQIA+ community of his administration’s commitment to equal treatment and gender equality.
“We should all be treated the same, no questions asked. That’s what we continue trying to do,” Marcos said. He emphasized that his wife is well-informed about the legal issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community.
While the national anti-discrimination law is still being deliberated in Congress, LGBT Pilipinas pledged to assist local government units in passing ordinances on anti-discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and sexual characteristics.
Cebu, Bacolod, and Davao Cities have already passed similar ordinances.
In 2022, the United Nations Human Rights Council urged the Philippines to pass a gender equality bill and other measures for protecting the LGBTQIA+ community.
Established in June 2016 and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, LGBT Pilipinas serves as a national alliance of LGBTQIA+ organizations, networks, and allied groups nationwide.
LGBT Pilipinas has been working alongside the government to dismantle barriers related to sexual orientation and gender identity. They have a grassroots following in 76 out of 81 provinces, with a membership exceeding 120,000 in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
