MANILA – The Philippines and Canada are seeking to strengthen their practical partnerships in disaster resilience as part of their efforts to enhance defense cooperation.

This collaborative initiative was discussed during the meeting held on August 4 between Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. and Canada’s Ambassador to the Philippines, David Bruce Hartman, at the DND headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

According to DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong, the two officials committed to pursuing practical cooperation on disaster resilience, education, and training, among other initiatives between the Philippine and Canadian defense establishments through capacity-building projects.

During the same meeting, Ambassador Hartman acknowledged the significance of the Indo-Pacific region and expressed Canada’s intent to increase its presence in the area.

With the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Canada approaching in 2024, Secretary Teodoro highlighted the timeliness of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, which aligns with the DND’s thrust to strengthen defense partnerships with like-minded states in addressing pressing and emerging security concerns in the region.

Both nations were ready to conclude the Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation, further commemorating this bilateral milestone.

Additionally, Secretary Teodoro reiterated the DND’s invitation to Canada’s Minister of National Defense for an official visit to the Philippines. This visit would serve as an opportunity to discuss areas of mutual concern and explore ways to advance bilateral defense relations.

These efforts reflect the commitment of both countries to work hand in hand on disaster resilience and strengthen their defense ties for the collective security and welfare of the region.
