The government is in the midst of talks for booster injections in 2022

The government’s vaccine procurement negotiation team is trying to get reformulated booster vaccines that are recommended to combat developing coronavirus strains.

According to National Task Force Against Covid-19 main implementer Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr.’s report to President Rodrigo Duterte over the weekend, next-generation vaccination boosters would prolong the effectiveness of the Covid-19 shot.

“We are currently negotiating with four manufacturers for the introduction of a reformulated booster for next year as ordered by (Department of Finance) Secretary (Carlos) Dominguez,” Galvez said at Friday’s Cabinet meeting (Sept 12, 2021) and Talk to the People, which aired Saturday morning.

Galvez previously revealed that the government has reached preliminary agreements with the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank for the second wave of vaccine purchase.

A budget of USD45 million (about PHP2.2 billion) has been set up for the 2022 supply, which will be determined by the vaccine experts panel’s recommendations.

Galvez also anticipates a shift in procurement methods, since certain vaccine producers may no longer allow multi-party agreements (MPA) to get Covid-19 vaccines.

“Perhaps other brands will alter our procurement methods in the future, because ‘yung mga ating mga LGU (local government units) at saka mga private sector, puwede na pong dumiretso. Because the LGUs and private sector may buy directly, you will not be able to acquire MPA. MPA is no longer in use), “he said

What is clear, according to Galvez, is a re-calibration of vaccination deployment throughout the country.

“As ordered by the President, we are recalibrating our Focus and Expand strategy and allocating additional resources to Region 4-A, Region 3, Region 7, Region 6, Region 10, Region 11, and other surge regions,” he added.

The vaccination czar also demanded that minimal health requirements be strictly followed.

“They stated that vaccines alone would not be enough to stop Delta, and that we needed to step up our preventive approach, which included effective masking, ventilation, and widespread immunization,” Galvez said.
