The government is capable of replenishing typhoon-damaged vaccines.
On Sunday, the National Task Force Against Covid-19 announced that it can replace vaccines that were damaged by Typhoon Odette last month.
Assistant Secretary Wilben Mayor, head of strategic communications for the NTF Against Covid-19, made the promise during a phone interview shortly after the US government provided 2,703,870 doses of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccinations through the COVAX Facility.
When “Odette” strikes portions of Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao on December 16 and 17, 2021, he claims the country will have enough vaccines to replace those that have been spoiled.
“If any of the shots are damaged or spoilt, we can replace them.” Mayor informed the Philippine News Agency, “We have the reserves to make that good.”
The replacement, however, will take some time because some typhoon-affected communities still lack electricity, putting the shots’ potency at risk.
“Doon sa Odette’s tinamaan kasi walang kuryente, iyon ang isa,” she says. Doon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon Ngayon, hindi pa siya suitable na magpadala. Pangalawa, ang kabuhayan muna nila at saka ang bahay, pagkain ang priority ng mga tao ngayon. Priority ang iyon doon. But, once again, iyong mga nasira, definite papalitan iyon (Some areas struck by Typhoon Odette still don’t have power, for example.) Because there isn’t enough power to distribute immunizations right now, it’s not a good idea. Second, the people’s top priority is, of course, their livelihood, followed by housing and food. That is the top priority. However, those that have been destroyed will undoubtedly be replaced),” he stated.
Vaccines should be kept in refrigerated storage.
According to the Department of Health, at least 21,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccination were thrown away in Iloilo, Central Visayas (Region 7), Eastern Visayas (Region 8), and Caraga (Region 13).
The country has received a total of 213,487,520 doses.
As of Saturday, the Philippines had given out 112,745,559 coronavirus vaccination doses across the country, including second doses to 52,109,143 Filipinos.
At Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2, Mayor Aquino and Melinda Angeles, project assistant for the United Nations Children’s Fund, received the shipment carried in by Silk Way West Airlines.
