Pasig village gives P500,000 to the last group of college students.
On Friday, a barangay in Pasig City released PHP500,000 to cover the tuition fees of its last batch of college learners for the upcoming semester.
In light of the hardships faced by a number of families afflicted by the epidemic, Barangay San Antonio (BSA) chairman Raymond Lising ordered the checks to be released.
According to Lising, his barangay now has 110 scholars enrolled in various colleges and universities.
“Magkakaiba lang ng school; hindi din sabay-sabay ang release ng matriculation checks,” Lising explained.
For this semester, Lising stated that the maximum amount of check per student is PHP25,000.
The BSA scholarship program gives priority to destitute students or students whose families do not have a steady source of income, which is especially important given that many people are struggling due to the prolonged health crisis.
“Ito ang isang programa na maganda ang maiiwan na legacy sa aming komunidad,” says the narrator. Ito sa dahilan, kaya natin pinarami ang BSA College Scholarship Program beneficiaries, mula sa 20 scholars umabot man ng 110 scholars (This is one program where we will be leaving a legacy for our community.) This is also why the number of BSA College Scholarship Program recipients was expanded from 20 to 110 scholars),” he explained.
He stated that education is the best present they can give to the youth since it allows them to pursue a college education despite their financial restraints.
“Ayon nga sa balita, maraming estudyante ang napilitang huminto sa pag-aaral dahil nahihirapan ang kanilang mga magulang na magbayad ng matrikula sa epekto ng pandemya,” he added.
The Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations of the Philippines revealed poor enrolment rates in private schools during a Senate hearing in August 2021.
Aside from paying their tuition and other costs, Lising said BSA scholars receive a monthly allowance of PHP1,500, which is distributed online.
As part of its efforts to be more innovative by employing technology in the face of the pandemic, BSA is the first barangay in Pasig to distribute ATM cards to scholars.
“Ang aming scholars din ay nakakatanggap ng school supplies mula sa BSA (Our scholars also receive school supplies at the beginning of the school year,” he stated.
The key prerequisites for students to apply for the scholarship in Barangay San Antonio, Pasig, according to Lising, are that they must be bona fide and permanent residents of the barangay, as well as present proof of their parent’s financial capabilities, such as an income tax return.
