Presidential bets to reconsider stance on ‘fake’ peace talks.
On Monday, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) cautioned presidential hopefuls that the so-called peace negotiations with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) are a sham.
NTF-ELCAC spokesperson for sectoral concerns, Undersecretary Lorraine Marie Badoy, stated communist parties have been categorized internationally as terrorist organizations, which is why candidates should not negotiate with them.
Badoy made the remark after Vice President Leni Robredo, Senators Panfilo Lacson and Manny Pacquiao, and Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso all said “yes” to continuing peace talks with the CPP-NPA-NDF in a televised interview over the weekend.
“Either Vice President Leni Robredo, Mayor Isko Moreno, Senator Ping Lacson, and Senator Manny Pacquiao have no idea about the true nature of these bogus peace talks and are thus unaware of who they are dealing with, or they are indifferent to the grievous consequences of their actions on our people and future generations of Filipinos,” Badoy said in a statement.
“The phony peace talks are a tactic in the CPP-NPA-enormous NDF’s arsenal for prolonging the prolonged war in the countryside with the express objective of overthrowing the government through violent means — but only after causing great pain and suffering to our people,” the statement continued.
Men in uniform die every time the Philippine government engages in peace talks with communist terrorist groups, according to Badoy, while recruitment among the poor and youth remains high as they take advantage of the government’s efforts for long-term peace and use the negotiations to protect themselves.
“During these sham peace talks, too, high-ranking CPP-NPA-NDF members who perpetrated heinous crimes against our people were released, and NPA terrorists roamed freely without fear of prosecution since those bogus peace talks provided protection to these terrorists,” Badoy said.
A semblance of credibility
Negotiating with communists will provide them with a sense of legitimacy and respectability, which will help them obtain foreign finance.
“In other words, the Philippine government’s descent to the level of these terrorists provides them with the international camouflage of respectability they require to appear to be what they claim to be — legitimate revolutionaries — rather than what they truly are: terrorists,” according to the statement.
Badoy said the painful lesson gained from previous peace talks conducted by the Philippine government was that “there is no peace to be had when dealing with terrorists, and therefore we must never again negotiate with terrorists.” As a result, our President has terminated these phony peace talks in a stern and decisive manner.”
Alarming
The NTF-ELCAC, according to Badoy, considered it disturbing that the four presidential candidates had made such a grave error in judgment, given that they are among the country’s most influential persons.
She claimed that the communists’ five-decade rule just implies that they “had allies in high places who offered them cover and legitimacy in the same manner that these four are doing now.”
According to the NTF-ELCAC, if presidential candidates are honest in their love for the country, they must educate themselves about the enemy’s nature and the means employed to destroy it.
Peace negotiations are not acceptable.
According to Badoy, Robredo, Lacson, Pacquiao, and Domagoso have “once again given these bogus peace talks a semblance of constitutionality and justice even” by agreeing to resume peace talks with the CPP-NPA-NDF. And in the process, they have caused harm to the country they claim to love.”
Rather than sponsoring phony peace talks, Badoy believes they should pledge to support and fund the highly effective localized peace process — genuine peace talks.
Over 24,000 violent extremists have returned to mainstream life after willingly surrendering to the government.
“The whole guerilla fronts have been dismantled across the country as a direct result of regular citizens joining hands with the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines), finally experiencing government care, and roundly rejecting this barbaric and brutal ideology,” the statement stated.
According to Badoy, a candidate who seeks the public’s trust must be deserving of it.
“Unless these four presidential aspirants educate themselves first about those phony peace talks and the nature of the beast, and change their minds about the egregious pronouncements they made to resume peace talks,” the statement read.
The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have all designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist organization.
The NDF was officially legally labeled as a terrorist group by the Anti-Terrorism Council on June 23, 2021, identifying it as “an integral and independent part” of the CPP-NPA, which was established in April 1973.
