Ukrainians, according to Pope Francis, “deserve peace.”
As the possibility of war with Russia loomed over the former Soviet republic, Pope Francis called for peace in a special prayer on Wednesday.
“I ask you to pray for peace in Ukraine every day this day,” Francis remarked at the conclusion of his weekly audience.
On Sunday, Pope Francis, the leader of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics, proposed an international day of peace prayers on Feb. 26 in response to the conflict in Ukraine.
“Suffering people, who have suffered hunger, who have borne countless cruelties, and who deserve peace,” Francis said of Ukrainians.
“May the prayers and screams that are rising to the sky today reach the hearts and minds of those who are responsible on earth, so that discourse prevails and the good of all is placed ahead of partisan interests,” he continued.
“Please, never war,” Francis said at the end of his speech.
