In its online plenary meeting, which began on Thursday, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is expected to examine the impending national and municipal elections, among other topics.

The CBCP secretary general, Msgr. Bernardo Pantin, stated that they had invited experts from a variety of fields to discuss election issues.

Pantin also stated that a pastoral statement in connection with the impending elections will be released in early February.

In an article published on the Conference’s news website, he stated, “The discussion tries to gather arguments and thoughts that can be included in the declaration.”

The virtual assembly will be presided over by CBCP President Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David. Vice President Mylo Hubert Vergara will support him.

Measures to increase environmental protection and climate action are also anticipated to be debated, according to Pantin. The Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice, and Peace (ECSA-JP), better known as Caritas Philippines, will lead the debates.

Vergara, on the other hand, has requested prayers as they convene for their biannual meeting.

“As we hold the CBCP 123rd Online Plenary Assembly, may we ask for prayers” (January 27-28, 2022). “Thank you,” he expressed his gratitude on his Facebook page.

Since mass gatherings are prohibited due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the two-day event will be the third time the plenary assembly will be held online.

The plenary assembly, which is the country’s top decision-making body of Catholic Church leaders, meets twice a year in regular sessions, in January and July.

Currently, the CBCP is made up of 86 active bishops, two priest administrators, and 41 retired bishops who serve as honorary members.
