Saskatchewan, Canada’s province, and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) signed a historic memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Thursday that will expand academic exchange opportunities.

The MOU, according to the Canadian Embassy in Manila, aims to develop links between post-secondary institutions in the Philippines and Saskatchewan by facilitating research collaboration and academic and student mobility.

“Canada welcomes the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding as evidence of our strong cooperation with the Philippines in higher education, which is based on years of cooperative effort,” Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Peter MacArthur stated.

“This MOU between CHED and Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Advanced Education is another building block on an already strong foundation upon which our countries’ people-to-people ties can thrive in the years ahead,” he added.

Saskatchewan is the first Canadian province to form an academic collaboration with the Philippine government.

“We are thrilled to bring recognition to Saskatchewan on a global stage and establish greater possibilities for students, faculty, and researchers,” stated Saskatchewan’s Minister of Advanced Education Gene Makowsky during the virtual signing ceremony.

The MOU is an important part of Saskatchewan’s new foreign education strategy, which can help the province’s economic recovery and population expansion ambitions.

The MOU, according to CHED Chairperson J. Prospero De Vera III, will serve as a foundation for the development of additional initiatives in areas such as information and education exchange, as well as research collaboration.

The MOU supports CHED’s efforts to improve the internationalization of Philippine higher education in areas including mobility, training, professional development, capacity-building, the creation of possible credit transfer instruments, and research partnership opportunities, among others.
