On Tuesday, President Rodrigo R. Duterte urged Filipinos to utilize Gat Andres Bonifacio’s bravery as a “guiding post” in overcoming the country’s challenges, especially the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

Duterte stressed the importance of honouring Bonifacio’s heroics in his speech at the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan City on the 158th anniversary of Bonifacio’s birth, as it continues to create a sense of hope, resolve, and optimism for today’s generation of Filipinos.

“The bravery and patriotism of Gat Andres Bonifacio and many of our forefathers who opposed foreign oppressors must serve as our guiding post in overcoming the odds that obstruct our progress as a people and a nation,” he said.

The ceremony, according to Duterte, serves as a constant reminder of Bonifacio’s and other national heroes’ achievements and sacrifices in paving the path for liberty and independence.

He urged Filipinos to follow in Bonifacio’s footsteps by actively participating in nation-building efforts, particularly during “difficult times” when the country’s health, safety, and welfare are at stake.

“In this light, I implore our kababayans to imitate Gat Andres Bonifacio’s strong sense of civic responsibility, courage, and love of nation in our daily lives, even in the most basic ways,” he added.

Filipinos should give their all for the sake of the people and the country, he urged.

Meanwhile, Duterte praised San Juan City for successfully hosting the event at the Pinaglabanan Shrine, which played a key part in the Katipunan’s fight for Philippine independence.

“The freshly restored El Deposito Underground Reservoir and the new diorama exhibit at the Museo ng Katipunan, which highlights the historical Battle of San Juan del Monte, make this year’s Bonifacio Day celebration even more special,” he said.

The President also complimented the Philippine National Historical Commission for restoring and rehabilitating historical and cultural landmarks, saying that they “give a glimpse of our lengthy and colorful past and heritage to the new generation of Filipinos.”

“Remembering historical events like these is, in fact, critical to improving our understanding and enjoyment of our country’s culture,” he said.

Returning to and appreciating the past, according to Duterte, will instil a stronger feeling of nationhood in current and future generations of Filipinos.

Martin Andanar, the Secretary of the Presidential Communications Operations Office, repeated Duterte’s plea to be inspired by Bonifacio’s patriotism, bravery, and feeling of brotherhood in a separate statement.

“May it also ignite in our hearts the collective desire to address societal ills and challenges, like as poverty, insurgency, terrorism, corruption, illegal narcotics, and the Covid-19 pandemic, for the progress and development of our country.” May this ambition lead our country to justice, prosperity, a pleasant existence for all Filipinos, and our reunification as a nation,” he said.

Bonifacio, unlike other national heroes, is remembered on his birthday, Nov. 30, 1863, rather than his death date, May 10, 1897, because he was executed by Filipinos.

Bonifacio Day has been declared a regular holiday by Proclamation 1107, which was issued by Duterte on February 26.
