In the face of Omicron risk, go with virtual holiday gatherings, say, health executives.
While no Omicron coronavirus variant has been found in the Philippines as of yet, the public is encouraged to remain careful and to go virtual with Christmas gatherings as much as possible in December.
“[K]ung makita ninyo po iyong cases sa Norway, ‘di ba mayroon silang malaking party na nagkaroon ng maraming good cases? To be sure, ngayong taon maganda po ngayong virtual Christmas party po muna tayo kung puwede (This is why I believe it is much preferable to conduct virtual Christmas parties instead) “Cynthia Saloma, executive director of the Philippine Genome Center (PGC), said in a Laging Handa briefing on Saturday.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire also warned the public that the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) is still present, despite the absence of Omicron.
“Because the virus is still there, we must continue to follow the safety precautions. Virtual parties muna if magki-Christmas party po baka maaari. Let’s have that sacrifice first, for the sake of the kapakanan ng ating pamilya at the sake of the kapakanan ng buong sambayanang Pilipino (If we’re going to a Christmas party, do it virtually if possible.) Let’s start with that sacrifice for our family and the Filipino people as a whole) “she stated
Meanwhile, according to Vergeire, the variation has not yet invaded the Philippines because no clusters or dramatic increases in illnesses have been reported.
“If you look at other nations, you’ll notice that nagpuputukan po ang mga kaso nila, biglang tumataas ang number, and dito naman po sa ating bansa ay hindi natin nakikita. (As you can see in other nations, the number of instances is rapidly increasing, but we don’t see it here in the country.) “she stated
“So, sa tingin ko sa ngayon, hindi pa nakakapasok ang version na ito sa ating bansa, hindi pa nakakapasok ang variant na ito sa ating bansa. At patuloy na minu-monitor iyan para makapagbigay ng abiso sa ating mga kababayan (So, I believe the version has not yet arrived in the country.) We will continue to keep an eye on this) “she continued.
The Department of Health has identified at least 253 people who came from South Africa to the Philippines, of whom 165 are undergoing verification, 72 are in quarantine, and eight are still missing.
The DOH has also sent samples of three people from Burkina Faso, Egypt, and South Africa who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 to the PGC to see if they had the variation, according to Vergeire.
“I believe it was yesterday that I kakasumite ng mga samples nila (Dec. 3). Kaya po kasama po siya doon sa batch na ipuproseso pa lang ng Philippine Genome Center, so we just wait for that (We just submitted their samples, I believe yesterday, and that’s among the batch that the PGC is processing, so we just wait for that) “she stated
According to Saloma, at least 242 people who returned from various countries in November 2021 tested positive for Covid-19.
Different laboratories are now requesting their samples for genomic sequencing.
