For the time being, the Taliban and Myanmar’s regime are not permitted to attend the United Nations.
On Wednesday, a UN committee postponed a decision on who will represent Afghanistan and Myanmar at the international body’s 193 members.
After a secret meeting of the General Assembly Credentials Committee, which she chaired, Sweden’s UN Ambassador Anna Enestrom told reporters that the committee had agreed to defer its decision on the credentials in these two circumstances.
As a result of the announcement, officials from the Afghan Taliban and Myanmar’s military regime would be barred from entering the international body for the time being.
The nine-member Credentials Committee is charged with examining the credentials of delegates from member states and reporting to the General Assembly.
Suhail Shaheen, the Taliban’s spokesman in Doha, has been nominated as Afghanistan’s UN ambassador. The Taliban usurped power from the internationally recognized government in mid-August.
