The WHO director-general and China’s leader talk about collaborating on the origins of Covid-19.
On Saturday, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met in Beijing to address the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19 pandemic), including the virus’s origins.
“We talked about #COVID19 and the necessity for a big push on #VaccinEquity this year to vaccinate 70% of the population.” “Solidarity is critical to securing vaccine access and affordability,” he stated on Twitter.
The largest barrier to resolving the pandemic, according to Tedros, is vaccination disparity.
“We also highlighted the necessity for more science-based and evidence-based collaboration on #COVID19 virus origins.” I appreciated his support for strengthening the @WHO and discussing a #PandemicAccord to improve global preparedness,” he wrote.
The virus’s exact origin, which has killed roughly 6 million people around the world, is unknown.
While there are rumors that it spilled from a Wuhan facility, where Covid-19 was first discovered in late 2019, there isn’t enough scientific proof to support this assertion. China has also disputed the charges on numerous occasions.
Li, who greeted Tedros at the Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony, told China’s state-run Xinhua news agency that China will continue to support the WHO in combating the pandemic and defending human health.
To battle the pandemic, Li appealed for unity, cooperation, and greater understanding among members of the world community.
Tedros also met with Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee, to “explore next steps in the promotion of sport and health.”
The virus was most likely transmitted from bats to humans, according to a WHO delegation of foreign specialists who visited Wuhan in January 2021, and the laboratory leak theory was deemed “very implausible.”
After China complained that the March research had been “politicized,” a new WHO inquiry team was constituted in August 2021.
