In 2022, the DA forecasts a 92 percent sufficiency rate for fisheries resources.
As part of its efforts to promote local output, the Department of Agriculture (DA) expects the sufficiency level of the country’s fishing resources to reach 92 percent this year.
The DA, on the other hand, stated that actual fish availability is based on variables that are currently beyond their control.
“Ang (Our) security level natin ay pangkasulukuyan naman,” says the narrator (can only depend on present circumstances). We did not inherit agriculture from our forefathers, and we will not inherit agriculture from the future, so we want it to be sustainable, which is why we implement the closed fishing seasons,” DA director for Operations Ariel Cayanan said in a press conference on Thursday.
The closed fishing seasons in coastal waters, according to Agriculture Secretary William Dar, are intended to allow fingerlings to mature and reach adulthood before fishermen are allowed to catch within their breeding grounds.
The DA approved the import of 60,000 metric tons of small pelagic fishes such as round scad (galunggong) and mackerel to meet market demand in the first quarter of the year.
According to the DA’s fish supply prediction data for the first quarter, fishery resource sufficiency is only expected to be at 85 percent.
Dar previously stated that the supply had been curtailed as a result of the damage caused by Typhoon Odette to the fishing sector in December.
According to Cayanan, the sufficiency level is expected to reach 106 percent in the second quarter, when the coastal waters will be available for fishing.
The DA, on the other hand, forecasts a drop of 89 percent in the third quarter and 87 percent in the fourth, bringing the annual sufficiency level to about 92 percent.
