More ‘Black Hawk’ training with the US Army Pacific is on the cards for the PAF.
MANILA โ With more S-70i “Black Hawk” combat utility helicopters on the way, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) is searching for more training opportunities with the United States Army Pacific Command (USARPAC).
During the latter’s visit to the PAF headquarters at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City on February 21, this was one of the topics discussed by PAF commander Lt. Gen. Connor Anthony Canlas and USARPAC leader Gen. Charles Flynn.
“The possibility of Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs) and training in helicopter operations, particularly the ‘Black Hawk,’ and other SMEEs, which will benefit both parties, has been discussed,” PAF spokesperson Lt. Col. Maynard Mariano said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Philippine Air Force currently operates 15 “Black Hawk” helicopters that were delivered in 2020 and 2021. Originally, there were 16, but one crashed on June 24, 2021, during a night-flying training.
After Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and PZL Mielec president Janusz Zakrecki formally signed the PHP32 billion contract for the acquisition of the additional helicopters on Tuesday, the Air Force is expected to receive 32 more “Black Hawk” helicopters within the next three years.
Apart from probable training for “Black Hawk” helicopter missions, Flynn and Canlas explored a variety of other operational issues.
“The two commanders talked about and shared their perspectives on how to integrate Ground-Based Air Defense Systems into the overall picture of the Integrated Air Defense Concept,” Mariano added.
He went on to say that the meeting ended with the USARPAC and the PAF pledging to maintain their collaboration and relationship.
