The LTFRB is reviewing petitions for fare hikes, according to the Palace.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” Malacanang said Monday that the applications for fare hikes filed by public utility jeepney drivers and operators in response to rising gasoline prices are now being considered.

A series of hearings will be held on the petitions submitted with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, according to Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, who also serves as the acting presidential spokesperson (LTFRB).

“May mekanismo naman po tayo tungkol diyan, in thatโ€”kung magkakaroon ba ng ganiyang mga options (We already have mechanisms on that, if we will have that sort of alternatives), it will have to start with the Department of Finance’s suggestion,” Nograles said in a press conference.

According to Nograles, the recommendation will be based on a series of consultations, dialogues, and the findings of the Development Budget Coordination Committee’s (DBCC) continuing investigations, which will be given to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte soon.

“Let’s go from there,” he said, “so iyan po iyong proseso na susundin natin (that’s the procedure we have to follow).”

The Federation of Philippine Jeepney Operators and Drivers Associations (FEJODAP) is reportedly requesting that the government raise the minimum fee on jeepneys by PHP5.

“Given recent events, the government remains prepared to give targeted relief assistance and support to alleviate the impact of the oil price hike on affected sectors, particularly Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) drivers, farmers, and fisherfolk,” the government stated in a statement.

According to the current oil futures, the Dubai crude oil price for this year is likely to average USD 83.3 per barrel, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ (BSP) estimate as of Feb. 17, although it is expected to decelerate to USD 79.0 by the end of the year.

Under the Department of Transportation’s Fuel Subsidy Program, the government is set to release PHP2.5 billion to help the transportation sector.

Farmers and fishermen will also benefit from fuel reductions, thanks to a PHP500 million budget set aside by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
