DepEd joins PISA to improve the quality of education in the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) stated on Friday that it will participate in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 cycle, an international system assessment designed to provide input on education quality.

The Department of Education noted in a statement that the country’s participation in PISA is in line with its ‘Sulong Edukalidad’ agenda.

“System assessments like PISA and the Department of Education’s National Achievement Test (NAT) provide the required feedback to drive policy decisions and reforms,” according to the department.

These system assessments are used to establish baselines for the basic education system and the implementation of the K to 12 curriculum, monitor its implementation, measure the effectiveness of its instructional reforms, and generate “reliable data” for international benchmarking, according to DepEd Order No. 29, s. 2017 titled “Policy Guidelines on System Assessment in the K to 12 Basic Education Program.”

Furthermore, it stated that system assessments will provide a foundation for educational program improvement as well as evidence to enhance policymaking, planning, and programming at “the division, regional, and national levels.”

“Continuity of data for monitoring progress and identifying gaps as well as areas of growth for basic education is made possible by consistent involvement in assessment,” according to the Department of Education.

It urged parents, teachers, and other education stakeholders to back DepEd’s “reforms and plans for improving the country’s educational quality.”

It stated that after the evaluation is completed in May 2022, more data on the conduct of PISA in the country will be shared with the media.

PISA was developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to assess the “skills and knowledge” of 15-year-old pupils in reading, mathematics, and science, according to its website.

Around 600,000 pupils from 79 nations and economies took part in the OECD’s reading-focused examination in 2018, with the results revealed on December 3, 2019.
