Misamis Oriental has almost 250 chickens. Alternatively, you could test negative for avian flu.
CITY OF CAGAYAN DE ORO – The provincial veterinary office (ProVet) said on Monday that 269 hens and ducks from various farms in Misamis Oriental province tested negative for the Avian Influenza virus (bird flu).
Following the virus’s discovery in Pampanga last January, provincial veterinarian Dr. Benjamin Resma said they began collecting blood samples from poultry animals as a preventative measure.
He said avian flu has infiltrated Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat province, in Mindanao last week.
According to him, the ProVet took 29 chicken and duck samples from Alubijid town, as well as 30 samples from Gitagum, Initao, Laguindingan, Libertad, Lugait, Naawan, Opol, and El Salvador City.
After being evaluated at the Department of Agriculture – Northern Mindanao’s Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RADDL), the samples came back negative (DA-10).
“The majority of the farms affected are duck farms.” During the flag ceremony at the capitol, Resma added, “Our team is also collecting blood samples (of chickens and ducks) from marshes and ‘humayan’ (rice fields).”
The provincial government has promised that bird flu border restrictions will remain in place indefinitely.
According to Resma, all entry ports into the province have been limited, particularly the Laguindingan Airport in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, which receives the majority of the egg shipments.
On Saturday, he added, the ProVet team discovered a large shipment of eggs from Mexico, Pampanga, that had arrived at the airport, and the owner was urged to return the shipment.
“The owner was asking for a favor because of the quantity and cost of the egg supplies,” Resma explained, “but we told them that we have an ordinance prohibiting it because there is an outbreak.”
