In Morocco, a new PH labor unit brings government assistance closer to Pinoys.

RABAT, Morocco. With the opening of the country’s overseas labor office in Morocco, Filipinos working in Morocco would have much simpler access to government aid.

In March 2021, the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Morocco began operations. For years, Filipino laborers in the North African country were governed by the Philippine Embassy in Madrid, then the Philippine Embassy in Tripoli.

“In Morocco, there was no such thing as a labor section before. This country used to be under the jurisdiction of (the Philippine Embassy in) Libya, so the labor attaché would only come here twice or three times a year, limiting his ability to focus and study how to make changes to ensure that our workers were properly documented “Dominador Salanga, the Philippine News Agency’s labor attaché, said (PNA).

Aside from challenges with proper documents, Salanga said the remittance cap of USD1,000 (about PHP52,000) each year is another major concern for Filipinos working in the Kingdom.

According to Salanga, an average Moroccan worker earns around USD4,800 (around PHP250,000) each year, leaving them with no alternative but to send the balance of their earnings through a middleman, which is more expensive.

“The Filipino worker will pay here, and the receiver will pay there, so I’ll meet with the (representatives) of the exchange office again on Monday to get clarification on what our citizens must do to remit money, because it’s only USD1,000. But that is the last resort they have (paying through a middleman) “he stated

POLO launched in Rabat less than a year after the Philippine Embassy in Morocco formally opened its doors in 2019. As the Philippines and Morocco seek to strengthen their ties, Salanga hopes the two countries can also agree on a labor pact.

“It’s not DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment) that signs the deal,” he said, “but maybe with the effort of (Ambassador Leslie Baja) we’ll be able to, and it’s a legacy to be able to enter into an arrangement with the host country.”

In Morocco, 4,600 Filipinos work, the most of whom are employed in residences, beauty salons, restaurants, and construction.

About 40 to 60 Filipinos work for a company in Casablanca that makes semi-conductors for overseas companies like Tesla.

Other Filipinos, on the other hand, work in companies that handle the shipping and storing of phosphate goods, Morocco’s most important export.
