Fuel subsidies for low-income households are welcomed by NegOcc guv.
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines โ In the midst of a series of oil price spikes, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson welcomed an increase in the government’s monthly fuel subsidy for impoverished Filipino families on Tuesday.
“I’m not surprised by the tiny sum because the issue is the money for such a reason.” “Whatever or however small the sum is, the President (Rodrigo Duterte) will truly give it to the people,” he stated.
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte announced on Monday that he had authorized Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III to enhance the grant from PHP200 to PHP500.
Lacson believes the Chief Executive offered even the smallest bit of financial assistance because he believes it will help alleviate the situation in some way.
“At this time, there is no directive, although the Department of Social Welfare and Development is normally involved in determining recipients.” What matters is that it reaches the intended audience,” he continued.
Duterte claimed in a speech that he heard “from the ground” that the PHP200 monthly cash assistance was “too small” to support a family of three to five members.
He went on to say that it will be up to the next administration to figure out how to fund the fuel subsidy.
The President’s decision to give a monthly fuel subsidy coincided with his decision to keep the excise duty on certain fuel items.
The suspension of fuel excise duties, according to the Department of Finance, would result in a colossal revenue loss of PHP105.9 billion, or roughly half of the country’s gross domestic product this year.
