Infections of the Omicron subvariant are on the rise in the United States.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Over one-third of new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections in the United States (US) have been caused by the BA.2 sub-lineage of the Omicron variation, which coincides with allergy season, potentially complicating symptoms and delaying appropriate diagnosis.

According to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the BA.2 variation accounted for around 34.9 percent of new Covid-19 infections in the country in the week ending March 19. (CDC).

This figure increased from 22.3 percent one week ago and 15.8 percent two weeks ago.

According to the data, the BA.2 variation is quickly spreading across the country, with infections nearly tripling each week in February.

In the last week, BA.2 prevalence has topped 50% in the northeastern region of the country.

Covid-19 instances are on the rise in regions of Europe and Asia as a result of BA.2’s rapid dissemination, and experts are concerned that the variant will soon spread to the United States.

According to Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease specialist, BA.2 will cause “an uptick in cases,” but not a major surge like other varieties have.

According to Fauci, the new strain is 50 to 60 percent more transmissible than the original Omicron strain, and it might become the prevalent strain in the United States.

The start of allergy season adds to the issue. Because several early signs of Covid-19 mirror allergies, such as a runny or congested nose, a cough, and lethargy, experts are concerned about allergy season.

It could make it harder to tell the difference between coronavirus and pollen allergies.

Meanwhile, scientists have warned that the drop in Covid-19 case counts after the peak in early January may not reflect the true scope of the pandemic.

According to Keri Althoff, a researcher at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, CDC case counts may underestimate genuine numbers since some people no longer get tested, and others test at home but don’t disclose the results.

She also pointed out that not every material is genetically sequenced to determine the variation.

Health professionals and experts emphasized the importance of Vaccines and boosters against Covid-19 remain the most effective ways to avoid serious disease from the virus.
