Local rice and seasonal vegetable prices have remained stable: DA
MANILA – Prices of locally-produced rice, seasonal vegetables including those used as pinakbet (mixed veggies) ingredients, and onion remained constant.
Department of Agriculture (DA) Assistant Secretary Noel Reyes said on Thursday’s Laging Handa public briefing that steady pricing look to provide consumers some leeway amid rising crude costs for the time being.
“It’s harvest season, and the prices of rice are good, ranging from PHP17 to PHP19; ang disinuwebe naman po, iyan ang buying price ng National Food Authority at maganda naman sa karamihan sa atin ang palay (It’s harvest season, and the prices of rice are good, ranging from PHP17 to PHP19; ang disinuwebe naman po
Meanwhile, plain milled rice costs between PHP36 and PHP38 per kilogram; well-milled rice costs between PHP39 and PHP42 per kilogram; and fancy or premium rice costs more than PHP40 per kilogram.
Although the Philippines has increased its rice self-sufficiency, Reyes claims the country still needs to import the staple to maintain a steady supply.
“Although ang ani ng ating palay mula pa noong 2019 – umabot na ng 19 million metric tons, naging 19.2 na ngayon ay 19.96 noong last year – gumaganda na ang ani ng ating palay mula pa noong 2019 – umabot na ng 19 million metric tons, naging 19.2 na nga So 92 percent sufficient na po tayo sa bigas kaya lang kulang pa po ng walong porsyento (Although we had a good rice harvest, ranging from 19 million metric tons to 19.2, and even up to 19.96 last year… It’s improving; we’re 92 percent self-sufficient in rice, but we’re still short by 8%),” he explained.
The DA also stated that prices of seasonal vegetables, such as string beans, squash, okra, bitter melon, eggplant, or those used in pinakbet, remain stable (mixed vegetables).
Even the price of onions, which are typically imported from Nueva Ecija, remains consistent.
“Ang presyuhan ngayon ay maganda, nasa PHP30 to PHP35 per kilo po ang pula.” Iyan naman po ang karamihan na tinatanim at inaani, karamihan dito sa Luzon po lalo na sa Nueva Ecija (Price rates for red [onions] are now good, ranging from PHP30 to PHP35 per kilo). The majority of them are grown and harvested in Luzon, especially in Nueva Ecija),” he noted.
