A total of 15 new inbred rice types have been approved for commercial sale.
MUNOZ SCIENCE CITY, NUEVA ECIJA – The National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) has approved the commercial distribution of 15 new inbred rice cultivars.
The Philippine Rice Research Institute developed eight of these types (PhilRice). Three cultivars for irrigated lowland (NSIC Rc 622, Rc 624, and Rc 626) and five are for pigmented non-glutinous special purposes (NSIC Rc 638 SR, Rc 640 SR, Rc 642 SR, Rc 644 SR, and Rc 646 SR).
The International Rice Research Institute, on the other hand, developed the seven other recognized rice types (IRRI). NSIC Rc 628, Rc 630, Rc 632, Rc 634, and Rc 636 are for irrigated lowland, one is zinc-biofortified (Rc 648), and one is for rainfed lowland (Rc 650).
In a social media post on Monday, Dr. Oliver E. Manangkil, senior plant breeder of the Department of Agriculture (DA)-PhilRice, noted that with these new rice varieties, farmers have more alternatives as to which is best suited to their farm’s conditions.
The cultivars would be presented to farmers through techno-demo farms as part of DA-and PhilRice’s its branch stations’ varied extension initiatives, he said.
Through their NextGen PLUS project, Manangkil said they have also introduced several new rice varieties to farmers in recent years.
The study, he added, is a collaboration between PhilRice, IRRI, the University of the Philippines-Los Baos, and the DA Regional Field Offices, and is sponsored by the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research as part of the DA National Rice Program’s Food Self-Sufficiency Program.
Multi-location experiments were conducted under the supervision of DA-regional field offices, as well as state schools and universities across the country, in all major irrigated and rainfed rice-growing regions.
In the fields of farmer-partners, adaptation trials were set up.
“We were able to deliver freshly released types to farmers in far-flung places thanks to NextGen.” Farmers were given the opportunity to choose the best rice tailored to their local conditions through participatory performance trials and validation, in which they planted varieties and were given the opportunity to choose the best rice appropriate to their local conditions,” Manangkil said.
