The relevance of regional collaboration in achieving the SDGs is highlighted by NEDA.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said Monday that regional cooperation is critical to sustaining growth and achieving the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

“Despite the epidemic, the Asia-Pacific (region) has made steady progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. While this is commendable, much more has to be done to realize our objective of profoundly revolutionary change in everyone’s lives. Economic growth must be built on the foundation of sustainable development, with people, the planet, and peace at its core, if it is to have a long-term and significant impact. “Our ability to work together in partnership for the goals will be critical,” Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua said.

From March 28 to March 31, 2022, the Philippines took part in the 9th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD).

Chua was elected chair and was tasked with moderating the forum’s proceedings, which focused on the progress of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the face of the coronavirus illness in 2019. (Covid-19).

In order to achieve the SDGs, Chua stressed the significance of international cooperation.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us, but the rewards we will receive in the form of a better world will be far greater. Your active involvement in this forum underlines our collective resolve and emphasizes our goal to build a more sustainable future that benefits everyone. “Our discussions brought to light our common realization that if we can harness the power of technology and collaborations, we can achieve our goals,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ country statement was presented by NEDA Undersecretary Rosemarie Edillon.

She emphasized three steps to influence the region’s future: promoting R&D and innovation, bridging the digital gap, and establishing multi-sectoral cooperation.

The forum’s remaining sessions were centered on stakeholder engagements and roundtable talks among member states to discuss regional progress on the SDGs.

During the discussion on the Voluntary National Reviews and the overall experience of twinning partners, Edillon acted as a panelist and the country’s representative.

Over 3,000 people attended the meeting, including representatives from 46 member and associate member countries, as well as intergovernmental organizations, UN bodies, international organizations, and other stakeholders.

The APFSD acts as a regional preparatory gathering for the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific’s 78th session, as well as the high-level political forum, which will take place in May and July 2022, respectively.
