Suspension of e-sabong is ruled out by a Senate bet.
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Raffy Tulfo, a senatorial candidate, opposes the suspension of online cockfighting (e-sabong), claiming that it might be a lucrative source of money for the government.
Tulfo urged that the government impose a sin tax on e-sabong operators, similar to the one imposed on cigarettes and alcoholic beverage items, at a press conference here Monday evening.
The sin tax, according to Tulfo, should be included in every bet placed by bettors to ensure that the operators pay the correct amount of tax.
“The government gains revenue every time gamblers place a wager,” Tulfo added, stressing that e-operators sabong is thought to be making hundreds of billions of pesos per month.
He claims that imposing a sin tax on e-sabong will help limit the legal betting age.
“Once you implement a sin tax on e-sabong, the betting price will rise, and not simply anyone, especially minors, will be able to readily place a bet,” Tulfo explained.
Last month, 23 senators signed Resolution No. 996, urging the Philippine Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to revoke e-sabong operators’ operating licenses and cease all associated activities immediately.
The Senate’s Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs is probing the disappearance of at least 31 e-sabong fans.
Tulfo, who is running for a Senate seat as an independent, arrived with his campaign group and spoke with local supporters.
Tulfo recalled his days as an elementary school student at Pilar College and Zamboanga Central Elementary School when his father, Col. Ramon Tulfo Sr., was the Philippine Constabulary commander in the city.
Tulfo paid Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar a courtesy call at City Hall on Tuesday. He also paid a visit to the open market.
