MANILA, Philippines — Starting Tuesday, elderly residents in Quezon City will no longer have to pay for some maintenance medications.

The Senior Citizens Maintenance Medicine Program will cover hypertension, diabetes, and excessive cholesterol, according to the local government.

Losartan (50mg/tab) and amlodipine (5mg/tab) for hypertension; metformin (500mg/tab) for diabetes; and simvastatin (20mg/tab) for high cholesterol will be offered for free until stocks last at health facilities.

Senior folks should go to https://quezoncity.gov.ph/covid-19-watch/hospitals-and-health-centers-directory/ to register.

. When visiting a health center, they must also bring their senior citizen identity and medical prescriptions.

Every month, they will receive free maintenance medications based on their needs.

On Facebook, netizens were quick to express their gratitude.

“Thank you, Mayor Joy Belmonte, and the Government of Quebec, for your proposal for all seniors. “God bless you all,” Charity Aleta wrote on Facebook.

Another homeowner expressed the hope that the local administration provides free vitamins and maintenance drugs to people under the age of 60 who are already using them.

“Sana all libre (I wish all was free),” says the narrator. Sebastian, Norma Calimpusan, wrote.

The free medicine program is based on City Ordinance no. SP-2892, which was passed in December 2019 but was recently reintroduced to accommodate more older persons.

Belmonte said in a statement released Monday that the city government is doing everything possible to provide citizens with accessible medical services and assistance.
